FreeCell

FreeCell

Use four free cells and build each suit from ace to king.

    About this game

Play FreeCell solitaire online. Use four free cells, build the foundations and explore a deal with hints, undo, a timer and a move counter.

    How to play

All 52 cards begin face up across eight columns. Build descending sequences in alternating colours and use four free cells to hold single cards. Move cards to the four foundations by suit, from ace to king. Available cells and empty columns determine how many cards you can move together.

    A useful starting tip

Keep free cells empty when possible. Before moving a sequence, work out where its cards could wait if you had to move them one at a time.

Every card is visible; access is the puzzle

FreeCell begins with all 52 cards exposed across eight columns. Reaching them remains the challenge. To free an ace or low rank, you relocate obstructing cards while preserving temporary space. Four cells provide rearrangement capacity, but each occupied one reduces that reserve. Seeing the target does not by itself create a legal route to it.

Unlike solitaires with hidden cards, you can compare several routes in advance. A short transfer into a cell may be convenient now, while a longer route through suitable columns can leave more options for the following task.

    Prepare a group transfer

Check card order and available space. Transfer capacity depends on empty cells and helper columns; an empty destination column is not counted as a helper. Any card can begin an empty column when the sequence and transfer are otherwise valid. Before filling a cell, decide where that card will return, and ensure an intermediate move does not occupy its planned destination.

    Spend free cells deliberately

A free cell is most useful when it creates a sequence of moves, not when it merely hides an awkward card. Before filling one, name the card that will leave it again. This small habit keeps room for longer transfers and makes the endgame much less cramped.

    Questions and answers

Why can I not move a valid sequence together?

Its length may exceed the capacity of your empty cells and helper columns. Free space or split the move while keeping a valid card order.

Does an empty destination column double capacity?

No. In (F + 1) × 2^E, E counts empty helper columns only. The column receiving the sequence is excluded.

Must an empty column start with a king?

No. FreeCell allows any card or legal sequence in an empty column. The king-only restriction belongs to Klondike, not this game.

Why avoid filling all four cells?

Each occupied cell reduces room for rearrangement. Before parking a card, identify the later move that will release that cell.

Can you show a concrete transfer calculation?

With two free cells and one empty helper column, the limit is (2 + 1) × 2 = 6. If that only empty column becomes the destination, no helper remains and the limit is three. Also check descending ranks, alternating colours and the receiving card. The formula describes temporary transfer capacity; it does not permit an invalid sequence or an unsuitable leading card.

How can a free cell remain temporary storage?

Before moving into it, name the later action that returns the card to a column or sends it to a foundation. Check that another intermediate card will not occupy the required destination. Evaluate the whole rearrangement: the target is released and some cells are available again. Simply removing an inconvenient card from view can fill all four cells and eliminate long transfers.

Why is a fully visible deal not automatically easy?

All cards are known, but column order and temporary spaces restrict access. You may see the required ace without enough room to release it. Compare a short route through cells with a longer route through suitable columns. The first looks convenient but may leave fewer options afterwards. Evaluate access to the following target as well as the current one rather than counting clicks alone.
