Build a stable corner
Choose a corner for your largest tile and try to keep it there. Arrange nearby values in a useful order, such as 128, 64, 32 and 16 along an edge. This is a planning aid, not a rule that must override every move. A forced slide may move the largest tile, so look at the whole board before committing.
Think beyond the next merge
Two equal tiles make one tile with double the value: 8 and 8 make 16. An immediate merge is useful only if the resulting position leaves another playable move. Before sliding, ask which pairs will be separated, where the smaller numbers can gather and whether the next larger tile will still have room beside its partner.
Protect empty squares
Empty squares are space for new tiles and future rearrangement. When the board gets crowded, examine all four directions instead of repeating a favourite move. Keeping a corner and preserving order can help you make more deliberate choices, but neither guarantees a 2048 tile. Try a new game and judge your progress by the quality of your decisions as well as the score.
Work through a slide before the new tile appears
Take the row 2, 2, 4, empty and slide left. The two twos merge, leaving the intermediate row 4, 4, empty, empty. The newly created four does not merge again during that same slide. Another legal slide is needed to make eight. A new tile appears after the board changes, so include it when planning the next move.
Similarly, 4, 4, 4, 4 becomes 8, 8, empty, empty when moved left, rather than immediately becoming sixteen. Small examples help you predict merge order. On the real board, all other rows move too; a good result in one row does not prove that the direction is good for the entire position.
A move check before each slide
- Locate the largest tile and check whether it will stay on your chosen edge. If not, consider whether you can bring it back without breaking other useful connections.
- Follow the small tiles. A useful move leaves room for them to combine instead of trapping a two between large, unequal numbers.
- Count the directions available afterwards. If a tempting merge leaves only one dangerous continuation, compare it with a smaller gain that preserves two options.
- Reassess after the new tile appears. Do not execute a memorised sequence automatically: the new number may occupy the very cell you were relying on.

Give your next game one specific objective: avoid leaving a small tile between your two largest numbers. After a poor move, identify when the break appeared and which other direction was available. That produces a concrete adjustment rather than the vague instruction to think harder.
When space is nearly exhausted, look first for immediate merges and a way to restore room. Preserving the corner remains useful, but a legal continuation matters more. If following the pattern makes you reject the only workable move, the pattern has become an obstacle. Judge the position after movement, not just whether the direction feels familiar.
